Lake James State Park Closed as Wildfires Continue

Nov 15, 2016 | News

Update: LJSP is back open. Check the park website for trail conditions.

Due to the wildfires that continue to burn in western North Carolina, the following State Parks are now closed. This includes Lake James State Park, therefore the MTB trails at Lake James are also currently closed.

Closed due to active wildfires:

  • South Mountains
  • Chimney Rock

These parks are also closed to allow staff to assist at those fire scenes:

  • New River
  • Elk Knob
  • Mount Mitchell
  • Lake James
  • Gorges
  • Mount Jefferson State Natural Area

Due to an extremely high risk of wildfire, all state parks currently have banned campfires and open cooking fires. Only charcoal fires east of I-95. Propane and cooking stoves are permitted everywhere. Before visiting, check a park’s web page on this site for local conditions.
